An Inside Look At Cruise Jobs

Applying for cruise jobs should not be taken lightly. Applicants should keep in mind that when they land such posts, it means looking forward to do a serious job aboard a ship and not going on a holiday. However, if you would like to work onshore and at the same time have the advantage of availing cheap travel via cruise ships, an onshore based office job could be most suitable for you.

The office based positions are mainly under the following departments: administration, bookings, customer service, human resources, information technology, marketing and sales. The requirements or qualifications for the office based positions are commonly the same as other industries, and in contrast to onboard positions, onshore work salaries have deductible income tax.

Clerical occupations are always in demand within the different departments of the industry. Know-how of basic office skills is typically necessary, which includes typing and computer literacy. Such office based positions are considered entry levels with a chance of promotion in the various departments.

On board jobs are quite different from…

…the onshore ones and are mostly comprised of the following divisions: entertainment, service and hospitality, personal care, and deck and engine.

Entertainment work includes the subsequent positions: cruise director, host and hostesses, cruise staff, performers, shore excursion staff, disc jockey, etc. The employees in the entertainment department entertain or keep passengers amused. Hence being an outgoing person and being used to a full social life is a compulsory requirement.

The service and hospitality positions consist of the following sections: hotel, purser, retail, food and beverage and information technology. These positions in general require any applicant to have previous work experience in the same line and capacity of work.

On the other hand, the personal care profession usually includes medical staff, message therapists, beauticians, fitness instructors, etc. The main responsibility of the personnel in this department is to provide for the well being of the passengers.

Deck and engine jobs take care of the maintenance…

…and running of the ship. Positions include maintenance workers, deckhands, officers and engineers. Aside from other specific duties, the employees in the deck and engine division should make certain that the ship meets all the necessary requirements of the international maritime regulations which include safety. Majority of the personnel from this department come from developing countries.

Being able to work with a cruise line company, either onshore or onboard does have its advantages. Fulfilling and adventurous as it may sound, jobs with cruising companies have the highest standards and having the attitude as well as the aptitude to maintain these standards is a basic requirement.
